Times Are A-Changing

11-27-2016Fr. John LettersFr. John Bonavitacola

Dear Friends,

Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no telling who that it's naming For the loser now will be later to win Cause the times they are a-changing.
Bob Dylan " The Times Are A-Changing"

Things sure do turn on a dime at times. The First Lady will be replaced by an immigrant. In fact the first grandma is also an immigrant yet I keep hearing how the President-elect is anti-immigrant. That must make for one really happy household. Speaking of the new first lady the fashion writer of the NY Times (who during the campaign called Mrs. Trump "a mannequin and a trophy wife") is quite appalled since (you better be sitting down) Mrs. Trump does not wear bespoke clothes but buys her clothes OFF THE RACK (even sometimes shopping at the GAP)! What horror. There was even one fashion designer that has publicly stated that because of the President-elects beliefs she will not design clothes for the new first lady. But I thought you could not refuse service to a customer because of their beliefs? Wasn't that the case with the baker and the florist who refused service for a same-sex wedding and were sued? Why is it ok for this fashion designer to refuse service? Additionally you would think that Mrs. Trump would be a darling to the progressive left: she is an immigrant, self-made woman who ran her own business, speaks five languages. But alas her crime is that she is not Mr. Clinton. What you are seeing here and will see a whole lot more of is the incongruity and even hypocrisy of progressive thought.

We see the same "it's good for me but not for thee" thinking when it comes to choice. Pro-choice is the rallying crying when it comes to abortion. But when it comes to education no choice. School choice is anathema to the progressive left and only because they do not want to choose it. To heck with the rest of us who do want a choice. But maybe now parents will get a to choose. The President-elect campaigned on a pro school choice platform and Vice President-elect Pence was governor of the only state with statewide school choice voucher program. In the meantime the new first lady chose to keep her ten-year-old son in his current school and not disrupt his life anymore than it already is, which means she will not be moving into the White House. That is really putting your child first.

The same dynamic is going on in California where a law was passed mandating that Crisis Pregnancy Centers post the name and location of the nearest abortion clinic. Yet those same abortion clinics are not required to post the name and location of the nearest Crisis Pregnancy Center. Good for me not for thee ..... Then there is the ever repeated chant for tolerance. One supplier of cooking spices, Penzeys Spices sent an e-mail to its customers requesting that anyone who voted for Mr. Trump cease purchasing their products and unsubscribe to their emails. Tolerance apparently doesn't include parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

The cries from the godless progressives are starting to ring hollow as their true agenda is more and more revealed. The coming months should expose more deeds of darkness and everyone will see the emptiness of their insistence on tolerance, equality and fairness. In the meantime it is important for the believer not to engage the same tactics as the godless but to continue to make the case for a civilization built on authentic, Godly love.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Love, Fr. John B.
