We were so close, and then defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory. I am referring to defunding Planned Parenthood, (aka Murder Inc.) which was part of the promised fixing of the ACA Healthcare. Planned Parenthood was quite nervous - witness the flood of TV commercials purporting how absolutely necessary PP is for women’s healthcare in AZ. Also witness the number of counter-protesters at our 40 Days For Life Vigils at the clinic on Apache Blvd. In fact, these counter-protesters are quite the opposite of the prayerful, friendly Prolife protesters. The opposition has been out in force, and they have been nasty with their loud music, hate spewing out of their bullhorn, lots of bright pink, raunchy signs, and more. WE DESPERATELY NEED SOME REENFORCEMENTS to continue to be a viable sign of hope to those considering an abortion at the Apache PP Clinic.
The battle to defend life has entered a new phase. Now that we know that those we elected to the U.S. Congress who promised to defund PP, can’t or won’t and are either liars or morons, we owe them no loyalty. They kept telling us they would if they could; now they finally could and they wouldn’t. I know I have said again and again that furthering a respect for human life should be a key principle when voting. And it still should be. But please know that our choices just became very limited when it comes to U.S. Congressional races, and despite their Prolife rhetoric, Republican candidates are not to be trusted. At least the Democratic candidates are honest about their proabortion bone fides and are willing to do what it takes to keep the abortion industry in business. From my perspective, I will now treat all U.S. Congressional candidates, both Democratic and Republican, as pro-abortion candidates despite claims to the contrary. (So far the Senators and President have kept their word to bring forward a U.S. Supreme Court Justice who is not rabidly pro abortion.)
But our best hope from the political/legislative angle is on the individual State level. Across the country we have passed as much Prolife legislation as the Courts will allow. Hopefully, with new appointments to the Federal bench by the Trump administration, we will get fewer Prolife laws blocked or overturned.
With all that in mind, I am reminded of the biblical injunction “not to trust in princes” nor put your faith in political alliances. While abortion is the Civil Rights issue of our day, it is ultimately God’s work. He alone can align the circumstances whereby human life is once again protected in law. It is up to us to defend it and care for it in life. It is up to us to change hearts and minds - one person at a time. It is up to us to provide hope to that woman struggling with an unplanned pregnancy or a difficult pregnancy. It is up to us to provide resources and alternatives to care for that mother and child before and after birth. And that is what we have been doing for over 40 years and will continue to do as long as needed.
While it is true that there is a political and legislative battle raging continually in our country over the issue of abortion, we should not forget that this is first and foremost a great spiritual battle. Your help is needed on the front lines. Listen to the words of one young mother who is out there on the front lines at the Abortion Clinic and her sincere plea for help:
“These are the front lines of the biggest spiritual battle we face right now, and we need fearless warriors. I know many of you pray and we need prayers, but we also need action. They are afraid that they are on the precipice of being defunded, of maybe even the overturning of Roe v Wade. We need to remember that we are the people who are praying the Rosary and getting the Sacraments and going to church and reading the Bible etc. or some combo of these. That not only fills us with grace but also puts the armor of God on us and gives us the strength and protection to go fight for the innocent babies who are being slaughtered here in our own country. Strength can be in our number as well! Please consider sending maybe one or two family members and commit to just going on Saturdays (9:30-11:00am is the height of it.) I know we are all busy and we have young children, but I am begging for help. If you can't go, please share this with anyone you think might be able to go.”
Again - “We will not rest; we will not weary until all human life, from conception to natural death, is cared for in life and protected in law.”
